sf state of mind

San Francisco is one of my favorite cities. I love the colorful Victorians. I love the shops you stumble across. I love the views from the hilly streets. And I love the green parks in the middle of busy neighborhoods.

When Alex and I decided to take a day trip to the city, we decided to spend our time in North Beach, also known as little Italy.

Our first stop was a little café along Columbus Avenue. I read only good things about Caffe Greco, especially their tiramisu. The place reminded me of Italy. The employees all seemed to speak Italian, the small shop had tables lined along the windows, prime for people watching and the tiramisu was home made. Before we got our paninis, we devoured the dessert and could taste the espresso-drenched ladyfingers.

Lunch was fuel for our small hike to the top of the Coit Tower, with panoramic views of the city. It was such a gorgeous day, we could see the Bay Bridge across the way.

Only in the city will you see what looked to be a group of clowns or performers putting on a show at the tower’s small grassy area. A few people stopped to watch, but it seemed like the show was more for them than an audience. Just behind the show, was a tie-dye-dressed woman meditating on a wall.

After visiting Coit Tower, we decided to venture to City Lights, a three-story independent book store and publisher. The creaky floors and narrow aisles added to its charm.

On our way back to the car, I couldn’t help but notice all the people lounging in the park. For such a fast-paced city, it was refreshing to see people reading a book, playing with their dogs and relaxing.

On my to-do list for my next visit to San Francisco is to eat my way through the city, spending a weekend trying some of the city’s best restaurants. Yum!
